Once upon a time there was a poor miller. He had three sons, a mill, a donkey, and a cat. Then miller died, his elder son got the mill, the second son got the donkey and the youngest son got the cat. The youngest son was very sad. He loved his father the most and wept for him.

"I have nothing but this cat!" he said. "My brothers can work and live on the mill. What can I do with this cat? I can eat it. I can make mittens of its shin. But I haven't got any house, or bread, or money. I shall soon die too! Oh, I am very, very unhappy."

The Cat heard this, came up to him and - what a surprise! - said, "Master, don't worry. I'll help you. Please, give me a bag and a pair of boots. You'll see what great wonders I can do! You are not as poor as you think."

The young man gave his cat all that he asked for.
